About Colorado Partnership Long Term Care Licensing Requirements

In 2007 the State of Colorado passed legislation to “opt in” to the national Partnership referendum to promote the planning to help pay for and prepare for individual long term care services.

Beginning in 2008 licensed insurance agents who desire to provide their clients advice and insurance products relating to Long Term Care Insurance in Colorado are required to complete and maintain specific state approved continuing education and training certification.

Insurance companies who choose to participate by offering Long Term Care insurance products must first submit those products for approval to the Colorado Division of Insurance. Additionally, it is these same companies who are responsible for monitoring whether, or not, licensed producers have completed the required course(s) prior to their submitting business for underwriting.

Colorado Training Requirements as of January 1, 2008:

Step One: Initially, there are two separate eight (8) hour courses required. These must be completed one time only.

The LTC Partnership General Class may be completed in the classroom, online or in a self-study format. We offer the self-study format to enable the agent to complete the class “off-line” at their leisure. While you can complete the courses in any order we suggest you do this one 1st because that is how the DOI designed them. There is a 35 question test required to be completed and passed with a 70% or greater score to receive your certificate. This is “open-book” testing but must be proctored.

The LTC Partnership Classroom course may only be completed in a classroom setting. There is no test but attendance during the entire classroom session is required. A certificate is provided at the end of the class provided you have registered in advance.

Successful completion of these two courses is electronically reported to the Colorado DOI as well as to Clear Cert within the 15 day period required by Colorado.

Step 2:  Within two years of completion of both of the eight hour courses each producer must complete a classroom or live webinar five hour approved LTC Partnership Refresher training class. This requirement continues every two years.

All of these required course qualify for Colorado DOI Continuing Education credits.
